What servicing does my gas fire or stove require?

All gas appliances must be serviced annually.

This service must be undertaken by a GasSafe (Great Britain), CORGI (Northern Ireland) or Bord Gàis (Republic of Ireland) approved engineer.

Your stove or fire should requires an annual service by a GasSafe (Great Britain).

Your Yeoman retailer should be able to arrange the annual service for you or you can find details of HETAS registered engineers by visiting

Do you recommend a CO (Carbon Monoxide) detector?

Any additional protection you can provide for your family has to be worthwhile. But all Yeoman appliances incorporate an ODS device which stops the gas flow should the carbon monoxide in your room reach an unsafe level due to any malfunction.

What size of Gas stove do I need?

To achieve a relaxing room temperature of around 21ºC when the external air temperature is at freezing (0ºC) you will need approximately 1kW of heat output for every 14 cubic meters of space.

Measure the length, width and height of your room and multiply the three figures together.

For example, a room measuring 7m long by 4m wide and with a height of 2.5m is 70 cu. m. of space. Divide by the sum by 14 and this means you will require a 5kW stove.

However, factors such as the number of outside walls, the size of windows and whether they are double glazed, the age of the home etc, can all influence the heat requirement.

We would always recommend you consult your local Yeoman retailer for expert advice before making your decision.

How much does it cost to run a gas stove?

This depends upon the efficiency of the stove you are considering.

Natural gas that is piped into most towns and cities in the UK currently costs around 2 pence per kW hour. For example, Gazco Gas Stockton with balanced flue has an input of 4.25kW so it will cost 8½ pence per hour to run.

However, the true also cost depends upon the efficiency of the appliance – the higher the efficiency, the cheaper it is to run – and, in the case of the balanced flue Gas Stockton 5 at 80% efficiency, you will have 3.40kW of heat output for 8.2 pence. This makes the real cost of your heating 2.5 pence per kW hour.

How can I compare the heating efficiencies of gas stoves?

Efficiency is assessed by measuring the heat output from an appliance in kW against the gas input in kW.

For example, Gazco Huntingdon 30 with balanced flue has an input of 4.10kW and output of 3.28kW, making it 80% efficient.

Further, as a general guide, balanced flue versions tend to be slightly more efficient than conventional flue versions.

Information on efficiencies is given on each Product Page on this website.
